16 UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritages of Vietnam

Up to now, Vietnam has 16 heritages recognized by UNESCO in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and the List of Intangible Cultural Heritages in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
 
These 16 intangible cultural heritages include: Nha Nhac - Nguyen Dynasty Court Music; Cultural Space of Gongs of the Central Highlands; Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Songs; Ca Tru Singing; Giong Festival at Phu Dong Temple and Soc Temple; Phu Tho Xoan Singing; Hung King Worship in Phu Tho; Southern Amateur Music; Vi and Dam Folk Songs in Nghe Tinh; Tug of War Rituals and Games; Vietnamese Mother Goddess Worship; Bai Choi Art in the Central Region; Then Practice of the Tay, Nung, Thai People; Thai Xoe Art; Cham Pottery Art and most recently, the Festival of the Lady of the Land of Sam Mountain.
 
In particular, Hue Royal Court Music was recognized in 2003, is the royal court music of the feudal period, performed during royal festivals, ceremonies or important events such as the coronation of the king, welcoming ambassadors... According to UNESCO's assessment, among the traditional music genres in Vietnam, Royal Court Music has reached national stature.

The space of gong culture in the Central Highlands (recognized in 2005), spread over 5 provinces: Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong and Lam Dong; closely associated with the lives of the Central Highlands people, as an indispensable part throughout the life cycle of each person and in almost all important events of the community.
Bac Ninh Quan Ho folk songs (recognized in 2009), are folk songs of the Northern Delta region, mainly concentrated in the Kinh Bac region (Bac Ninh and Bac Giang). Quan Ho is practiced in cultural and social activities of the community; preserved and passed down through many generations by the community, becoming the local identity and spreading into a unique cultural space.
The art of Ca Tru (recognized in 2009) has a special position in the treasure trove of traditional Vietnamese music, closely associated with festivals, customs, beliefs, literature, ideology and philosophy of life of the Vietnamese people.
Gióng Festival at Phù Đổng Temple and Sóc Temple - Hanoi (recognized in 2010), associated with the legend of a boy born to his mother in a strange way in Phù Đổng village. Gióng Festival at Phù Đổng Temple (Phu Đống Commune, Gia Lâm District - where Saint Gióng was born) takes place from the 7th/9th day of the 4th lunar month. Gióng Festival at Sóc Temple (Phu Linh Commune, Sóc Sơn District, where Saint Gióng was sanctified and rode a horse to heaven) takes place from the 6th/8th day of the 1st lunar month.
Xoan singing art (recognized in 2011 and 2017) originated from the form of singing to worship the Hung Kings, one of the unique cultural activities of the Phu Tho people.
Hung King worship (recognized in 2012), expressing gratitude to the founder of the Vietnamese people. The most typical manifestation of Hung King worship in Phu Tho is the Hung King's death anniversary ceremony, held on the 10th day of the 3rd lunar month every year at the Hung Temple Historical Relic Site.
Southern amateur music art (recognized in 2013) is a typical folk art form of the Southern region, formed and developed from the end of the 19th century on the basis of ritual music, Hue royal court music and folk literature.
Nghe Tinh Vi and Giam folk songs (recognized in 2014) are two folk singing styles without accompaniment, created by the communities of Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces, passed down during the labor and production process, closely associated with the daily life of the Nghe An community.
Tug of war rituals and games (recognized in 2015) are widely practiced in rice-growing culture in many East Asian countries with the meaning of praying for favorable weather, good wind, bountiful crops or predictions related to the success or failure of farming efforts.
The practice of worshipping the Mother Goddess of the Three Realms of the Vietnamese people (recognized in 2016) is a fusion of indigenous religions of the Vietnamese people and some elements of imported religions such as Taoism and Buddhism, which have a profound influence on the social life and consciousness of the Vietnamese people.
The art of Bài Chòi in Central Vietnam (recognized in 2017) is both a creative and spontaneous performing art form and a fun and intellectual folk game (combining music, poetry, acting, painting and literature).
The practice of Then by the Tay, Nung and Thai people (recognized in 2019) is an indispensable ritual in the spiritual life of the Tay, Nung and Thai people, reflecting their views on humans, the natural world and the universe.
The art of Xòe Thai (recognized in 2021) is a unique traditional dance form, occupying an important position in the life of the Thai community in the four northwestern provinces of Vietnam: Lai Chau, Son La, Dien Bien and Yen Bai.
The art of pottery making by the Cham people (recognized in 2022) in Bau Truc village (Ninh Thuan province) has existed since the end of the 12th century. To date, Bau Truc is considered one of the very few ancient pottery villages in Southeast Asia that still retains the primitive pottery production method from thousands of years ago.
The Via Ba Chua Xu Festival on Sam Mountain is a spiritual ritual and artistic performance, expressing the belief and gratitude to Mother Earth - Mother Land of the Vietnamese, Cham, Khmer, and Chinese ethnic communities in Chau Doc, An Giang.
